Abstract

F1 hybrids in chillies and bell peppers are valued for their uniformity, high yields and stress tolerance. Genetic male sterility, a stable monogenic recessive trait, is essential for cost-effective hybrid seed production. This study validated markers for five GMS genes—ms10, ms8, ms1, ms3, and msw. While markers for ms10, ms1, and ms8 were detected in some hybrids, they require confirmation in segregating populations. Conversely, the limited use of other genes stems from a lack of reliable sterile sources and tightly linked markers. Developing more robust markers will be critical for improving breeding efficiency and genetic diversity in pepper varieties.
